About Us ...

I've learned it's all about us working together as client and outside advertising advisor that makes really good things happen.

As their expert guide, I take pride in serving clients with roadmaps and actions to solve the unique challenges of small business advertising.

That's why business owners like you hire folks like me.

My start in creating advertising for small businesses actually evolved through news photography. After spending two years at Whitman College in Walla Walla, WA, I graduated from Boston University in journalism with a major in photojournalism.

When I landed my first job as a newspaper photographer/reporter (and the only salaried position I have ever held), I was assigned -- among other duties -- to take photos of many new businesses.

Meeting these small business owners/entrepreneurs was quite an education for me, listening as each positioned their businesses in a unique way to gain market recognition. They wanted to make some money, earn success and support their families. But most of all, their goal was to bring their products and services to "the masses".

Thus the transition from news photographer to creating my own advertising agency was a pretty natural process of emerging to the next level. Along the way, I met contacts and suppliers who helped me grow exponentially.

Since I lived in a New York City suburb just over an hour from Manhattan by train in Westport, CT of "The Man In The Gray Flannel Suit" movie fame, and the focus those days was on "big business", working with small businesses was a real challenge.

It was easy to sense the "underdog" orientation of the small business owners who wanted to get into the big leagues but didn't have the money or expertise. They were so into surviving and making ends meet, advertising (which they desperately needed) was on the back burner. And I was still learning how the best way to achieve mutual goals is truly about us creatives and clients working together!

Has anything changed in the current business environment? Yes and No. Today, small businesses have been recognized as important force in our economy. Yet each one still struggles to survive, make profits and grow, especially with the national chain retailers infiltrating even the smallest of towns. Big business is not about us!

If you are a small business, perhaps you can benefit from my years of experience! Like you, I try to stay on top of buying patterns and consumer preferences, including the web! (Click here for more advertising tips)

But I was slow to recognize one of the big trends when it started. The popularity of T-shirts! I thought, "Who, in their right mind, would want to advertise someone else's product? And on their chest?" It was beer, automotive parts, any local business.

T-shirts let the wearer say "I'm a self-chosen member of this group of (you name-it) enthusiasts". If you're like me, I'm your friend. We share the same "brand". It's about us. And wearing this T-shirt, I'm OK in your eyes. Wow, what a concept!

Now, in retrospective, several trends had converged. One was the switch to the more informal fashions of jeans and t-shirts. Another was the rebellion against big business as evidenced by individuality and more personalization.

Out of this came such disciplines as 1-to-1 relationship building, special interest groups, niche marketing and lots of other related group bonding opportunities.

What does this mean to you? Think of some local fund-raising events in your community. Chances are, they have a t-shirt associated with the event. You can channel this interest into building your own business.

Today, it's really about us working together to find the most productive advertising roadmap we can create for your business.

If you'd like a prompt and personal answer to your small business advertising question, I'll do my best to give you a straight answer.
